Obituary

Gladys A. (Smith) Harney, of Melrose, died on May 14, 2012 at the age of 93. Gladys was born & raised in Cambridge and a graduate of Cambridge High & Latin. She resided in Cambridge for many years, Malden for 20 years and the past 20 years in Melrose. Gladys worked as a Bakery Manager for Jordan Marsh in Malden for many years and a member of St. Mary's Church in Melrose. She enjoyed traveling, quilting, sewing, cooking, baking, ceramics, crafts and making things for her family. Gladys was homemaker and beloved wife of the late Bernard P. Harney for 57 years. Loving mother of Mary T. Benfield & her husband Ross of WA, William J. Harney & his wife Mary Ann of Reading and James M. Harney & his wife Jane of Melrose. Cherished grandmother of Laura, Annie, Jimmy and Patrick Harney. Caring sister of the late Helen Broderick and Oscar Smith. Devoted aunt of Ruth Swinamer, William & Jack Harney, Norma Greene and Eileen Monaco. Also survived by all her dear friends at the Cefalo Memorial Complex in Melrose. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Thursday May 17th at 10:30AM. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose at 11:30AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours on Wednesday from 5-8PM. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her name to Hallmark Health Hospice 178 Savin St., Malden, MA 02148.
