Obituary

Grace Walsh Kelley, of Malden, died at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston on Jan. 16, 2005 at the age of 88. Grace was born in Schenectady, NY in 1916. She was the daughter of the late Frank & Viola Walsh. Grace graduated from Simmons College and the Massachusetts general Hospital School of Nursing in 1938. She also received a Masters of Education from Fairfield University in 1972. Grace practiced nursing for 47 years before retiring at the age of Seventy. She had 6 children with her first husband of 34 years. Grace is survived by Dr. Pat Rooney, James Rooney of MD, Eileen Callahan, Margaret Wellington, both of CA, Mary Rooney-Belmonte of Melrose, MA. She was predeceased by her daughter Sister Mary Grace Rooney of NJ. Grace is survived by 12 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren & 1 great grandchild. Grace was active in the Girl Scouts for 18 years and also was a den mother for her sons. She was a member & officer of the faculty Wives of John Carroll University and a active volunteer for the American heart and Lung Association. Grace was a past President and active member of Simmons College Club. She was active in the Massachusetts General Hospital alumnae Association from 1938-present. Working with St. Annes Church in Cleveland, Ohio, she did development work and planning. Working with the medical director of the Presbyterian Nursing Home in Utica, New York, she held meetings in her basement with pharmacists, dieticians, rabbis and ministers to establish Hospice of Utica, New York. Her hobbies included swimming, tennis and square dancing as well as baking, sewing and quilting. Walter Kelley, a former neighbor and classmate, returned to Schenectady, New York for his 50th High School reunion on June 8, 1985. They were married on June 29, 1985 and she became Mrs. Grace Kelley. They resided in Yuba City and Clear Creak, California for the next 18 years. Mr. Kelley died last January, and Mrs. Kelley moved to Malden, Massachusetts to live close to her daughter Mary in September of last year. A memorial service will be held at the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Wednesday Jan. 19th at 11AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 10-11AM. Burial will be private.
