Harland G. "Mac" McCallum passed away at Epoch of Melrose on Wednesday, February 19, 2014. He was 92 years of age. Mac was born in Tyngsboro, MA on September 20, 1921 to the late Asa & Lillis (Favro) McCallum. He was raised in Pelham New Hampshire and Melrose and entered the service from Melrose. Mr. McCallum served his country with pride during WWII with the US Marines for 3 years in the South Pacific as a sharp shooter. He has been a longtime resident of Melrose. Mac started his career by working at the B&M Railroad in Boston for 10 years before starting his own construction Company, H. G. McCallum Construction of Melrose. He owned and operated the company for over 20 years. Mr. McCallum was a tireless worker who continued to work well into his 80's. Mac loved taking trips to the White Mountains, Lincoln & Passaconaway NH and traveling over the Kancamagus Highway. He was a huge Boston Red Sox fan but above all he cherished his family and all the times spent with them. Mac was the beloved husband of 68 years to Leola V. (MacLean) McCallum. Devoted father of Harland G. McCallum Jr. & his wife Marjorie, Chester Asa McCallum all of NJ, Debbie McCallum of Melrose, Diane Genica of Chelmsford and Denise Caughey of Melrose. Also survived by 15 grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Monday, February 24th from 11:00AM-1:00PM, followed by a service at 1PM, concluding with military honors. Relatives & friends are invited to attend. Burial will be private.
