Harold C. Smith, Jr. of Wakefield, died on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at the E. N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital of Bedford. He was 80 years of age. Born on June 25, 1928 in Cambridge, MA to the late Harold C. & Mary (Kennedy) Smith, he was raised in Cambridge & Somerville; where he graduated from the Somerville Trade School. Mr. Smith served proudly in the United States Navy during the Korean War and later worked as a Master Millwright with the Polaroid Corporation of Boston for 33 years. Harold was an easy-going, laid back man who studied the meditation philosophies of Paramahansa Yogananda. He was a gentle and loving father, who loved watching and photographing his children and grandchildren while they participated in their sports and activities. He enjoyed golf, horse racing, collecting coins and minerals, panning for gold, horseshoes and cribbage. Harold was the beloved husband of Ruth H. (Tansey) Smith of Wakefield with whom he shared 50 years of marriage. He was the loving father of Susan J. (Emery) Farkas of Danvers, Ruthanne Smith-Datalo & her husband Kim of Wakefield, Janis M. (Smith) Iddings & her husband Matthew of Foxboro, Robert A. Smith of Wakefield, the late Paul E. Emery, Jr., and father-in-law of Louis J. Farkas of Wilmington. Cherished grandfather of Amanda J. Farkas-Boulet of Haverhill, Brian L. Farkas of Wilmington, Matthew & Alexandra Datalo of Wakefield, and Benjamin Iddings of Foxboro. Doting great grandfather of Cori & Braden Boulet of Haverhill. Caring brother of Shirley Hayes & her late husband Richard of Needham, Donald A. Smith & his wife Winifred of Reading, Arleen Rose of Melrose, and the late Jessie Vercellini. Special brother-in-law of Lois Whaley & her late husband William, and the late Joan James. Also survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W.
