Obituary

Capt. James Judd Bell, USNR, of Oneonta, formerly of Walton, passed peacefully on March 25, 2022 at Oosterman's Rest Home in Melrose, MA at the age of 80 after struggling with Parkinson's. Born a twin to Harold Philip and Anne Dibble (Brackett) Bell in 1941 in Kansas City, MO Jim was a kind, caring, diligent man with a great sense of humor. He graduated from Washington High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1959. An NROTC recipient granting him a full scholarship for 4 years at Dartmouth College, he received his BA in Economics in 3 years, with the 4th year spent as his first year of graduate school at Amos Tuck School of Business. He was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy just prior to receiving his Dartmouth diploma and then married his first wife, Susan "Sudy" (Bullock) Bell, a week after graduation. His four years of active Navy duty began at the Navy Supply Corps School in Athens, GA followed by his first tour of duty in Naples, Italy where his first of three daughters was born in 1965. He had further schooling at the transportation management school at NAS Alameda, CA, where he finished out his navy commitment and where his second daughter was born in 1966. After completing his active duty commitment to the Navy, the family moved to New Hampshire so Jim could complete his MBA at Amos Tuck School. Jim didn't hesitate to join the Navy Reserves where he retired after 25+ years of service; extremely proud of his time in the Navy and his achievement of the rank of Captain. Jim started his finance career with Chase Manhattan Bank in NYC while living in New Jersey where his third daughter was born in 1970, eventually moving the family to Kinderhook, NY to finish out his banking career. He joined Scott Machine in Walton, NY in the early 1980's where he lived with his second wife, Eilene A. Flanagan. He was very involved in the Walton community, including being a very active member of Christ Church and acting as Treasurer of the Walton Fire Department for many years. He was predeceased by his parents, second wife, and brother-in-law, John A. Morefield, Jr. He was the proud and loving father of Elizabeth "Tiva" and her husband Chris Constantopoulos of Lee, MA, Rebecca "Beki" Bell of Eustis, FL, and Barbara Bell and her partner, Chris Dubeau, of Melrose, MA. Very proud grandfather of Arman and Ahnika Chaharom, Panayiotis Constantopoulos and Sarah Bell. Brother of Philip, Mary Anne and his fraternal twin, John. Also survived by his first wife, extended family and very dear friends. The family will hold a private memorial at a later date. Gifts may be made in memory of James J. Bell to support Christ Church, 41 Gardiner Place, Walton, NY 13856. Memories or notes of condolence may be sent to Barbara Bell, 3 Hunnewell Street, Melrose MA, 02176.
