Obituary

James K. Day passed away at his home in Melrose on December 7, 2021, he was 88 years of age. Jim was born in Brighton on September 10, 1933 to the late James A & Alice M. (Clark) Day. Jim was raised in Melrose, graduated from St. Mary's Grammar School and Melrose High School. Mr. Day joined the US Navy, was in the Navy Reserves for 37 years as a hospital corpsman and was a US Navy Korean War Veteran. He attended the University of Notre Dame for several years and graduated from Boston University in 1964. Jim lived in New York City from 1964-1971, Middletown NY for 14 years, Dedham, MA for 17 years and Melrose since 1976. He was in pharmaceutical sales for 15 years in New York and Massachusetts. Jim was also a Navy Chaplin for many years, was a member of the Polish Legion of American Veteran's in Salem, the Vietnam Veterans Association of America and was a neighbor Eucharistic Minister at St. John Crysostam Church in West Roxbury. Jim was a devoted volunteer and enjoyed being of service in his community. He had a life-long love of reading literature, and the same passion for letter writing. He had a talent for languages and studied French, retaining his ability to speak the language, long after studying it. Until his passing, he wrote regularly to his daughter in NYC, and also wrote to several friends around the country, for many decades. Jim was left handed, and despite being born with Dupuyteren's Contracture in that hand, he was an ever-faithful writer of entertaining letters, with beautiful penmanship. His correspondences will be missed. He was also a lifelong Red Sox fan and scored every game by longhand; he even recently met Dan Shaughnessy of the Boston Globe to discuss his favorite team. Mr. Day was the former husband of Vita Amodeo Day. Father of Danielle L "Daniella" Day. Brother of Stephen C. Day & his late wife Judy, Thomas Day & his wife Louise, Charles Day, Douglas Day & his wife Katherine, and Gregory G. Day & his late wife Linda. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces & nephews and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose on Saturday, April 30, 2022 at 10:30AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend.
