Rev. James A. Field passed away at the rectory at Incarnation Church in Melrose on Monday, July 12, 2010 from pancreatic cancer. Father Jim was born in Salem on December 23, 1950 to the late James & Mary (Shea) Field; he was a native son of Marblehead and the St. Mary Star of the Sea Church. Father Field was a member of the Xaverian Brothers before entering Pope John XIII National Seminary in Weston. He taught at Xaverian Brothers High School in Middletown, CT, was an Associate Head Master and Dean of Studies at Malden Catholic High School and currently a member of the Board of Trustees. Father Field was an alumnus of the University of Notre Dame, where he received his master's degree in liturgy in 1979. He was the director of the center for pastoral liturgies at Notre Dame, director of worship in the Diocese of Norwich, CT and the Archdiocese of Boston. Father Jim served as deacon at Sacred Heart Parish in Lexington, Parochial Vicar at St. Paul Parish in Cambridge and Gate of Heaven Parish in South Boston. Father Field has been the Pastor at Incarnation Church in Melrose for the past 8 years coming to Melrose in May 2002. He was a member of the board of directors of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate and the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions. Father Field was a well known writer, lecturer and speaker on liturgical reform in the US and parish life. Father Jim loved read, read & read, cook, write, travel, anything associated with travel, art, the art festival in Marblehead and walking his dog Sophia. He was the brother of the late John Gerard "Gerry" Field & Martin Thomas Field II. Caring brother-in-law of Maura A. Field of Marblehead. Cousin of Philip Morgan, Patricia Morgan, Andrew Morgan & his wife Nancy & Jeff Morgan all of Melrose and Meghan Shea of Haverhill. Also survived by many devoted & caring friends & parishioners. Reception of the body at Incarnation Church on Thurs. July 15th at 2PM followed by visiting hours until 8PM concluding with Evening Prayer. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at The Parish of the Incarnation of Our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, 425 Upham St., Melrose on Fri. July 16th at 11AM. Cardinal Sean O'Malley will preside. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend services on Thursday & Friday. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem.
