Obituary

James R. Goodwin, born on November 30th, 1940, in East Boston, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 16th, 2025. Longtime resident of Lynn, Massachusetts, James was eighty-four years of age.

James was one of four children born to the late James E. and Beatrice M. (Walsh) Goodwin. James was raised and educated in East Boston, where he graduated from East Boston High School in 1959. Shortly after graduating, James enlisted in the United States Marine Corps where he honorably served as a Private from 1959 to 1963. James's love for his country and the military remained with him for the entirety of his life. Upon returning from service, James worked for the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA). James enjoyed a long career at the MBTA until early retirement.

James was a member of the Masonic Fraternity for 52 years. He became a member of the Fraternity in December of 1972, and went on to serve as Master of three Lodges. James was appointed District Grand Master for the Boston 3rd Masonic District in 1993. He was awarded the Joseph Warren Distinguished Service Medal in 1998. The sustained passion and devotion that he showed as a Freemason was an inspiration to all who knew him.

James held many interests. He had a passion for knowledge. Whether he was reading or watching documentaries, James was constantly learning. James's wisdom and wit were evident to all that interacted with him, especially those who opposed him while watching Jeopardy. So much so, that opponents were suspicious of him having prior knowledge of questions when watching shows together. James also loved cooking, puzzling, gardening, and spending time with his furry friends. James loved the ocean. Earlier in his life, he often sailed his boat out of Salem or took day trips to Gloucester. James loved to laugh and spend time with family. Everyone could hear when the Goodwin family was together, as evidenced by their boisterous laughter, especially when he was with his sisters, Virginia, Mary, and Judy. Prior to Judy's passing, James regularly took long road trips to visit his sister in California and Florida, often making the long trip with family by his side.

James was a loyal friend of Bill W. for over 45 years. He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to recovery and his dedication to encouraging others on their shared journey.

James is survived by his loving daughter, Christine Skinner of Haverhill, Massachusetts, granddaughter, Katherine Skinner of Woburn, Massachusetts, as well as nieces and nephews. James is survived by many dear friends. The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to Susan Haskell, for her devoted care and compassion shown to James. James is predeceased by his sisters, Virginia, Mary, and Judy.
