James E. Mahoney passed away at the Massachusetts General Hospital, on Sunday, April 27, 2008. He was 79 years of age. Jim was born in Stoneham, raised in Malden, graduated from Malden Catholic High School, Class of 1946. He entered the US Navy and served during WWII from 1946 to 1948. After his discharge he went to Boston University and graduated in 1952. Mr. Mahoney had been a resident of Melrose since 1955 and had summered in Moultonboro, NH, since 1960. James was a business manager for the OPEI Union (part of the AFL-CIO) for 30 years and was a recipient the Cushing-Gavin Award for his outstanding work in labor relation's leadership. He enjoyed golfing at MT Hood Golf Course in Melrose, was a former member of the Malden K of C, the Incarnation Church Bowling League and was a member of the unaffiliated East Side Golf Association. Jim was one of the founding members of Incarnation Church in Melrose, where he served as an usher and Eucharistic Minister. Mr. Mahoney was the beloved husband of the late Joan A. (Ratican) Mahoney. Loving father of Stephen P. Mahoney & his wife Carol of Salem, NH, Michael K. Mahoney & his wife Donna of Windham, NH and Ellen M. Hilsinger & her husband Mark of Methuen. Cherished grandfather of James, Luke, Meghan, Katlyn, Emily, Michaela, Devin & Ryan. Brother of the late Thomas Mahoney, Irene Arsenault & Louise Mahoney. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Friday, May 2nd at 10:30AM. Funeral Mass in The Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St. Melrose, at 11:30AM. (due to Holy Day on Thursday) Visiting hours Wed. April 30th from 4-8PM. Relatives & friends invited. Interment will be private. WWII Navy Veteran.
