James T. McKinlay, Jr. of Wellesley, formerly of Melrose, died Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham after a long illness. He was 90 years old and a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Born in Lynn, Massachusetts on September 21, 1919 to the late James T. & Mary E. (Flannagan) McKinlay, he was a 1936 graduate of Lynn English High School and a graduate from Salem State in 1940 with a Bachelor of Sciences Degree in Business Education. Mr. McKinlay served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and was a radio and gun turret operator on the B17 Bomber. He was shot down in his second mission and was a Prisoner of War at Stalag 17 in Austria for 22 months. Jim came home and continued his education at Boston University, graduating with a Master's Degree in Education and receiving a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Specialization in Guidance. He was a resident of Melrose since 1952 and lived the last two years in Wellesley. He enjoyed all sports, especially the Red Sox, golf and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He was a teacher and a guidance counselor at Everett High School for 35 years. He was the devoted husband of Barbara E. (Flaherty) McKinlay, with whom they shared 65 years of marriage. He was the loving father of James T. McKinlay, III of Newport, RI, Thomas E. McKinlay of Sandwich, John F. McKinlay & his wife Jane E. Cybulski of Lynn, Rosemary Bell & her husband Stephen J. of Wayland & Barbara E. Connolly & her husband William T. of Wellesley. Cherished grandfather of Katherine McKinlay & Christopher McKinlay, Stephen Bell, Michael Bell & his wife Meagan, Stephanie & Michaela Bell, William, John, Molly & Michael Connolly. Great grandfather of Ashlynn Clifford. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Tues. Aug. 10 at 9AM.
