Obituary

James S. Mahoney in Malden, formerly of Medford & Woburn, passed away on December 22, 2022 surrounded by his family. James was 90 years of age. He was born in Woburn on October 14, 1932 to the late Joseph & Mary Eileen (Goodman) Mahoney. He was raised in Woburn, graduated from Woburn High School and served his country with pride in the US Army during the Korean War.

James was a longtime resident of Medford and worked as a refrigeration engineer for the Hussman Company for many years. He was known for his Irish sense of humor and for his "One liners". He also enjoyed his summer cottage rents at Long Sands Beach in York, Maine.

James was a voracious reader of the history of WWI & WWII and especially the civil war and had visited Gettysburg on several occasions. But above all he loved and cherished the times spent with his large extended family.

James is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary G. (McAvoy) Mahoney. He was the loving father of Mary C. Hastings & her husband John of Malden, James Mahoney & his wife Ann Marie of Wilmington, Diane McBrine & her husband John of Tewksbury and the late John J. Mahoney. He was the cherished grandfather of Jillian Hastings Gayed & her spouse Michael, Lauren Hastings & her spouse Lilian Mengesha, John Hastings IV, Jared McBrine, Brendan McBrine, Melissa Mahoney McGilvray & her spouse Philip, and Hillary Mahoney O'Connell & her spouse Scott. Proud great grandfather of Vivian & Jack. Loving brother of the late Marie Mahoney, Eleanor O'Keefe, Elizabeth Quinn, Joseph Mahoney, Henry Mahoney, John Mahoney, Therese Dowd and Charles Mahoney. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 from 4:00-7:00PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 441 Fellsway West, Medford, on Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at 10:00AM, followed by a burial with military honors at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford.
