IN LOVING MEMORY OF
James L.
Sarni, Jr.
March 1, 1929 – May 7, 2025
James (Jim) L. Sarni Jr., a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones May 7, 2025. He was married to his beloved wife, Jeanette "Gina", for 65 years. He is survived by his loving children, Sandra J. Sarni-Garlow, Diana M. Sarni, James L. Sarni, M.D., Ken D. Sarni; his long-time loving caregiver, Evelin Belshoff; 10 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. He owned and operated famed Sarni Cleaners of Boston for over 40 years.
Born March 1, 1929, Jim was the beloved son of Mary and James Sarni, Sr., also of Melrose. He is predeceased by his brothers, Ralph Sarni and Jack Sarni, also of Melrose; and sister, Mary Rubino of Wakefield.
Jim was a lifelong resident of Melrose. He graduated Melrose High School and then attended the University of Miami, Florida, where he met the love of his life, Jeanette. Dancing under the Miami moon by Biscayne Bay, or cruising down Collins Avenue to enjoy a late-night milkshake at Wofie's, they started a Hollywood romance that lasted 65 years. After college, he moved back to Boston where, with his brothers, he ran and developed Sarni Cleaners, the largest dry-cleaning business in Boston. Eventually Jim owned and ran over 14 stores in Greater Boston, providing a vital service to its residents and employing hundreds of people.
Jim was a proud veteran, serving in the United States Army during the Korean conflict and continued that service as a member of The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts. He was active in local activities as well as a member of the Melrose Kiwanis Club, where he served as President from 1973-74. He loved animals as well, owning several dogs and horses.
But it was time with his family that Jim Sarni really loved, especially at their summer home on Lewis Bay, West Yarmouth. He was an avid boater, tennis player, and golfer, but it was time at home that held the most significance for him. He had a quiet kindness about him that everyone loved. His gentle demeanor and welcoming nature put everyone at ease. All who knew him liked him, everyone who met him felt at ease with him.
His passing leaves a great void, but his spirit endures in the laughter and lives of his adult children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
