Obituary

Jane M. (Murphy) Bain, a lifelong resident of Melrose and dedicated member of the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital staff, passed away at Massachusetts General Hospital on January 20, 2014. She was 84 years of age. Jane was born in Boston to the late Patrick & Helen (Orthman) Murphy. She was raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1947 and from the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital School of Nursing in 1950. Mrs. Bain also graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and a Masters Degree in Nursing. Jane had a long career working for Melrose-Wakefield Hospital that spanned over 50 years. She started as a surgical nurse, went on to teach and become the director of Melrose-Wakefield School of Nursing until its closure. Mrs. Bain continued to work at the hospital as Vice President of Quality Assurance, before ending her career as Vice President of Administrative Service and Support Services in 1998. She was well known and loved by all throughout the medical community. Jane was a member of the Melrose-Wakefield Auxiliary, the alumni association of Melrose-Wakefield School of Nursing and a longtime member of St. Mary's Church. Mrs. Bain loved entertaining family members and friends, was an excellent knitter, an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed taking trips to Bartlett and Deerfield New Hampshire. Jane was the loving mother of Kimberley M. Bain of Wakefield. Loving partner of The Honorable James W. Killam III of Reading & Melrose. Beloved sister of the late Alice Vets, May Kearney, John J. Murphy & Helen P. Ball. Cherished aunt of Carl Vets, Ernest Murphy, Robert Vets, Maureen DeVivo, Marsha Burke, Marion Dennehy, Howard Murphy, William Ball, the late Patricia Ball McLaughlin, Trevor Killam, David Killam and Gayle McEwen-Killam. Devoted friend of Kate Charles & Barbara Kenworthy. Also survived by many loving grand nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Saturday, January 25,th at 8:00AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 9:00AM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Friday from 3:00-8:00PM. Interment at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jane Murphy Bain Nursing Scholarship Fund, c/o Melrose High School Permanent Scholarship Fund, P.O.
