John S. "Jack" Campbell passed away at the Cardigan Nursing Home in Scituate on Sunday April 6, 2014. Jack was born in Cambridge on September 21, 1922; he was raised in Medford and graduated from Medford Vocational School. Mr. Campbell entered the US Army in 1942 and served his country with pride for 3 years during WWII. After his discharge from the Army Jack worked as a mechanical engineer for Riverside Press in Cambridge and then for Rand McNally until 1972. He started his own machine shop C and N Sales & Service in 1972 and ran that business until his retirement at the age of 83. Jack lived in Melrose for 12 years, Reading for 50 years and the past 2 years in Marshfield. Mr. Campbell was an avid golfer who had two holes in one in the same year at the age of 80. He was a gracious, soft spoken, gentle man who had a huge extended family and was known as "Dad" to many people. Jack was a member of the Book Binders Guild, a member of the USGA, enjoyed spending time on Anna Maria Island in Florida, at Bass Rocks in Gloucester and in Bar Harbor Maine. Mr. Campbell was the beloved husband of 68 years to H. Loraine (Gregoire) Campbell. Loving father of Dale McCarthy & her husband John of FL, Richard Campbell & his wife Linda of Reading and Lauren Payne & her husband William Swanson of Pembroke. Brother of Verta Bennett of NJ and the late Gordon, Robert & William Campbell. Also survived by 9 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Thursday, April 10th from 10:00-12:00PM, followed by a funeral service at 12 Noon. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial with military honors at Puritan Lawn Cemetery in Peabody following the service.
