John Patrick Durney succumbed to colon cancer, at his home in Chicago IL, on Feb. 3rd, at the age of 51. John was born and raised in Melrose, he graduated from St. Marys Grammar School and Melrose High School, Class of 1972. Mr. Durney lived most of his life in Melrose, before moving to Chicago 4 years ago. He was an avid Red Sox fan. John owned Alewife Cleaning Service in Boston for 20 years, retiring in Chicago to pursue a degree in computer science at De Paul University. John is survived by his loving partner of 16 years Michael Fasanella of Chicago. Son of Charles A. & Frances (Bigley) Durney of Melrose. Brother of Pamela Johansen of Winchester, Margaret Kelly-Nichols of Melrose, Paul Durney of FL, Charles A. Durney Jr. of Rockport, Peter Durney of Dennis, Thomas Durney, Patricia Durney both of Melrose, Christopher Durney of Tewksbury and Maryellen Balfour of Melrose. He was predeceased by his identical twin the late James Michael Durney. Also survived numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Wed. Feb. 9th at 10:30AM. Funeral mass in St. Marys Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 11:30AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Tues. 4-8PM. Burial will be private.
