John D. 'Dibby' Harrigan, 74, died at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital Friday after a brief illness. Born in Malden, he was a life-long resident of Melrose. Dibby was a maintenance worker at Caruso's Diplomat Function Hall in Saugus. During WW II he served in the Navy at the invasions of Normandy, Southern France and Okinawa. Dibby was aboard the U S S Quincy and later aboard the U S S Massachusetts, and finally aboard the U S S Missouri in Tokyo Bay during the signing of the surrender of Japan. He earned four battle stars in the action in the Pacific. He was a featherweight boxer, and a member of the Harold O. Young Post # 2394 and Melrose Elks #1031. John was the husband of the late Dorothy M. ( Gibbons ) Harrigan. Father of Patricia M. Murch & her husband Robert of Billerica. Grandfather of Robert Murch & his wife Michele of Lowell and John Murch & his wife Laurie of Methuen. Great grandfather of Brittany, Griffin & Jordan Murch. Brother of the late William Lee Harrigan. Also survived by special companion Cathy Colomey. Funeral Services will be held at the Gately Funeral Home 79 W Foster St. Melrose on Monday June 23 at 9 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Sunday 5 to 9 PM. Burial will be in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. WW II Navy Veteran.
