John P. Martin passed away at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on May 14, 2007. He was 81. John was born and raised in Somerville, graduated from BC High School, Boston College and Harvard Law School. Before entering college he served in the US Navy during WWII and was presented the Purple Heart for wounds received at Okinawa. Mr. Martin was a partner in the law firm of Lourie & Cutler in Boston for 37 years, retiring in 1989. John has been a resident of Melrose since 1959, he coached Melrose Little League and CYO Basketball, where he was named Man of the Year in the Woburn District. John had a great sense of humor, was an avid sports fan and enjoyed his trips to Quebec & the Kentucky Derby. Mr. Martin was a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association and a member of Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Wakefield. Husband of Louise M. (Connelly) Martin. Father of Peggy Trainor & her late husband Paul of Melrose, Joseph I. Martin & his wife Rosamond of Beverly and John P. Martin Jr. & his wife Paula of Winthrop. Brother of Rev. Joseph I. Martin of Lima, Peru & the late Mary Landerfin. Grandfather of Meredith L. Trainor of Everett, Paul F. Trainor III of Worcester, CPL John Martin Trainor USMC of NC, LCPL Brian J. Trainor USMC of CA, Joseph Patrick, Anne Louise & Francis William Martin all of Beverly. Also survived by 2 brothers-in-law; Louis Connelly of Burlington, Clifford Bouvier of Ipswich and many nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Sat. May 19th, at 9AM. Funeral Mass in The Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield, at 10AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Friday 2-4 & 7-9PM. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden. In lieu of flowers contributions to the Society of St. James the Apostle, 24 Clark St., Boston, MA 02109-1127 would be appreciated.
