John J. Murphy passed away at his home in Melrose, on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. He was 85 years of age. John was born in Boston on August 10, 1925 to the late John T. & Mary A. (Sullivan) Murphy. He was raised in Roslindale, graduated from Boston Latin High School and was admitted to MIT. Mr. Murphy left college to serve in the US Navy during WWII and returned to MIT to finish his degree in electrical engineering. John worked as an electrical engineer for Boston Edison for over 40 years and was a member of the IEEE Organization. Mr. Murphy has been a resident of Melrose for over 55 years, was a longtime member of St. Mary's Church in Melrose and served as President of the Holy Name Society at church for many years. He was the loving husband of 58 years to Helen M. (Connor) Murphy. Devoted father of Thomas P. & Joseph A. Murphy both of Melrose, Mary A. Bragel & her husband James of Derry, NH, Theresa B. LeBrun & her husband Kevin of Stoneham, William G. Murphy & his wife Lynn of Derry, NH, Judith H. Kossuth & her husband John of Mendon, Annette J. Murphy & her husband Tim of Chelmsford and the late John F. Murphy & Andrew J. Murphy. Wonderful grandfather of Andrew, Daniel & Michael LeBrun, Cassandra, Joshua & Jacob Murphy, Melanie, John & Erin Kossuth. Beloved brother of Catherine Stahle of MD, Florence Hallahan of W. Roxbury & Anne Murphy of Walpole. Dear cousin of Patsy Jandrue & Catherine Dietlein. Also survived by many nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Friday, January 7th at 8AM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 9AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Thursday from 4:00-8:00PM. Interment at Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
