John E. OBrien passed away at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on September 8, 2007. He was 74 years of age. John was raised in Somerville, graduated from Somerville High School and has been a resident of Melrose for the past 52 years. He was an amateur boxer, boxed with the AAU and traveled to Argentina as a guest of Juan Perone. Mr. OBrien worked as an interstate truck driver for the Teamsters Local #25 of Boston for 24 years. He was a loving grandfather with a great sense of humor. Mr. OBrien enjoyed skiing, skating, golfing and loved all the activities at Mt. Hood in Melrose. John was a former member of the K of C in Melrose, a member of the Democratic City Committee, a longtime member of Incarnation Church in Melrose and was well know at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, where he volunteered for over 10 years. He was the husband of Eleanor M. (Kiley) OBrien. Father of John E. OBrien Jr. & his wife Suzann of Lynn, Karen E. Ciaramitaro of Melrose, Susan M. Kilday & her husband Michael of Dover, NH & Paula A. Cargill & her husband Philip of N. Andover. Brother of Alan OBrien of Marshfield. Grandfather of Katherine, Melissa & Michael Kilday, Amy & Alison Ciaramitaro, Kiley & Colin Cargill, Brett & Sophia OBrien. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Wed. Sept. 12th at 9AM. Funeral Mass in The Church of the Incarnation, 425 Upham St. Melrose, at 10AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Tues. 4-8PM.
