John F. O'Neil died suddenly at home in Melrose Sept. 12th at the age of 88. He was born and raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School Class of 1932 and has been a lifelong resident of Melrose. During WWII John worked for the Boston Navy Yard in the 1940's and then started his own general contracting business, John F. O'Neil Inc. of Melrose, which he ran since the 1950's. He served on the Board of Alderman for the City of Melrose from 1958-1961 and was Past President of the Board of Alderman in 1961. John was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church and a member of the K of C in Melrose. He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Maher) O'Neil. Father of John G. O'Neil & his wife Elizabeth of Salisbury, Mary O. Angelos & her husband Nicholas of Andover, Mark J. O'Neil & his wife Joanne of Beverly, Barbara G. Thompson of Melrose and the late Kathleen A. O'Neil. Brother of Elizabeth Contreas of Melrose and the late Evelyn O'Neil, William O'Neil, David O'Neil, Martha Doucette and Mary Helen Oatman. Grandfather of Shelia B. & Deborah L. O'Neil, Mark P. & Nicole E. Angelos, Meaghan J. & Mark J. O'Neil. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Monday Sept. 16th at 8 AM. Funeral mass in St. Mary's Church Herbert St. Melrose at 9 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Sunday 6-9PM. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery Stoneham.
