John F. Slaney, of Melrose, died at the Chelsea Soldier's Home in Chelsea on Sept. 16th at the age of 78. John was born in Boston, raised in Mattapan and a graduate of Hyde Park High School, Class of 1949. After High School, John served in the Air Force during the Korean War in both the Air Force Police & Fire. He worked as a Building Supervisor for the YWCA in Boston for 21 years before his retirement in 1995. John was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Wakefield & the Blind Veteran's Association for over 10 years. He enjoyed war movies, Lionel trains and trips to Foxwood Casino. John was the beloved husband of the late Mary T. (McGillicuddy) Slaney for 42 years. Loving father of John J. Slaney & his wife Jennifer of Billerica and Stephen J. Slaney & his wife Stacy of Lynnfield. Caring brother of the late Virginia Burns & her husband Robert of NC. Also survived by 7 grandchildren and many nieces & nephews. A funeral service will be held at the Gately Funeral Home on Sunday Sept. 20th at 4PM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 2-4PM. Interment in VA National Cemetery, Bourne will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in John's name to Cops for kids with Cancer, P.O. Box 850956 Braintree, MA 02185.
