John A. Tolland passed away at the Epoch Senior Care Center, after receiving wonderful care from the staff, on August 21, 2008. He was 77 years old. John was born in Boston, raised in Hyde Park and graduated from Hyde Park High School, Class of 1948. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. Mr. Tolland graduated from Bryant Stratton College in Boston and worked as a cost accountant for Transitron in Wakefield, MaCom in Burlington as well as several other companies in the Boston area. He lived in Medford most of his life and cherished the days raising his family on Charden Rd. in Medford. John was a longtime member of St. Raphael Church in West Medford where he served as a greeter, a CCD teacher and Eucharistic Minister. Mr. Tolland was a member and past treasurer of the Irish American Club in Malden and a 4th Degree Knight at the Medford Council. He loved Boston sports, the Red Sox, Ted Williams, his trip to Ireland, playing cards with his longtime friends and in the last few years playing beano with his friends at the Fuller House. Devoted husband of the late M. Phyllis (MacVarish) Tolland. Loving father of Laura J. Clougherty & her husband Tim of Melrose, Stephen F. Tolland & his fiance Anne Nee of Merrimac, NH, Sheila M. Pondo & her husband Bob of FL, Virginia A. "Ginny" Lombardo & her husband Mark of Melrose and the late John A. Tolland Jr. Brother of Richard Tolland & his wife Charlotte of CT and the late Leo & Joseph Tolland. Brother-in-law of Helen Tolland of Randolph & Grace Tolland of Foxboro. Grandfather of Tim, Erin, Colleen, Matthew, Kelsey, Stephen, Alison, Jessica, Miranda & Lydia. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Tuesday, August. 26th, at 7:45AM. Funeral Mass in St. Raphael Church, 512 High St. W. Medford, at 9AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Monday 4-8PM. Interment in Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford.
