Joseph E. Hallinan died after a long illness at home March 9th at the age of 79. He was born and raised in Melrose, was a life long resident, graduated from Somerville Vocational School and attended MIT. He served in the US Army during WWII as a 1st Sgt. of a Tank Company with the 9th division in Europe. Joseph was president & treasurer of Hallinan Brothers Inc, an oil company in Melrose for 38yrs. He was elected a Director of the Fuel Oil Institute of America, was a member of the New England Fuel Dealers Assoc, the New England Fuel Council and in 1947 he was appointed by the State Fire Marshall of Mass. to a committee to prepare a standard uniform Code of Fire Prevention Rules & Regulations for the installation of heating equipment. In May 1976 Joseph was appointed by the Federal Energy Administration in Washington DC as Monitoring Agent in the Northeast Section of the Country. After retiring from the oil company in 1978 he joined the Royal Arcanum Fraternal Life Insurance Co. On March 15,1978 he became the new Supreme Secretary of the Royal Arcanum Fraternal Life Insurance Co. until his retirement on Aug. 28,1998. At the 1998 Supreme Council Session of the Royal Arcanum Fraternal Life Insurance Co., Brother Hallinan was elected a Life Member of the Supreme Council Executive Committee. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery Melrose. He was the husband of Annette M. (Chatelle) Hallinan. Father of Mary L. Hallinan of Melrose, Patricia A. Hepburn of Orlando FL, Joanne M. Morrissey of Melrose, Joseph E. Hallinan Jr. of Chelmsford and Susan J. Brownson of Warren VT. Brother of Robert Hallinan of NH, Regina Vandenberghe of Washington State and Martha Ryan of Canada.
