Joseph E. Hallinan, Jr. of Melrose died on Friday, September 21, 2012 at the E.N. Rogers VA Hospital in Bedford. He was only 59 years old. Born in Medford on March 17, 1953, he was the son of the late Joseph E. Sr. & Annette M. (Chatelle) Hallinan. Joe was raised in Melrose and a 1971 graduate of Melrose High School. After high school, he joined the United States Army National Guard in 1974 and received an Honorable Discharge in 1991. Mr. Hallinan worked at the Melrose Bowling Alley as a teenager and then was a self-employed painter for over 10 years. He had the idea to paint the dinosaur orange at the miniature golf on Route 1 in Saugus and it has been a land mark for many years as people drove by. He enjoyed fishing at Horne Pond in Woburn and golfing. Joseph was the loving brother of Mary L. Hallinan of Melrose, Patricia A. Hepburn & her husband David of FL, Joanne M. Morrissey of Melrose & Susan J. Calabrese & her husband Mark of VT. Caring Uncle of Joanna Quill of Melrose, Joseph Morrissey of Melrose, Lindsey Brownson & Patrick Brownson, both of VT. Great Uncle of Keira & Janelle Quill. Also survived by many cousins. A Funeral will be held from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Wednesday, September 26th at 9AM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in Incarnation Church 429 Upham St. Melrose at 10AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours Tuesday from 4-8PM.
