Joseph P. Smith, of Melrose, died at the Meadowview Care & Rehab. Center in North Reading on Feb. 16, 2009 at the age of 80. Joseph was born & raised in Cambridge and a graduate of Rindge Technical High School & Wentworth Institute in Boston. Joe was a WWI Army Veteran. He worked as a engineer for Raytheon for over 35 years before his retirement. Joe resided in Melrose for many years and enjoyed dancing, listening to Irish music and giving to many charities. He was a member of the 1000 Club in Wakefield, Senior Chorus in Wakefield, the Milano Center in Melrose and was part of a BarberShop Quartet. Joseph was the beloved husband of the late Irene C. (Haverty) Smith and Marie T. (Corrado) Smith. Loving father of Joseph P. Smith III of Melrose, Karen M. Lewin & her husband Kevin of Saugus and Irene T. Nadile & her husband Brian of Billerica. Caring stepfather of Geraldine Corrado of S. Boston, Donna MacDonald of Melrose, Robert Corrado & his wife Suzanne of Portland, ME, Richard Corrado & his wife Susan of WA and the late Maryann Blue. Devoted grandfather of Erika Nadile, Amy MacDonald, Stacy Hitchman, Katy & Christopher Corrado, Michael, Nicholas and Alexandra Corrado. Great grandfather of Sarah & Nicholas Hitchman. Devoted brother of Claire Babcock of Billerica and the late Bernard Smith, Irene Maher and Anne Doherty. Also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Thursday Feb. 19th at 8AM. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church Herbert St., Melrose at 9AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours on Wednesday from 4-8PM. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery, Brighton.
