Josephine M. ONeil, of Melrose, died at the Park Avenue Nursing & Rehab. Center in Arlington on May 12, 2007 at the age of 103. Josephine was born in Byfield & raised in Melrose. She attended St. Marys Grammar School and graduated from Mary Cliff Academy in Winchester. Josephine went on to earn her degree from Lowell State College and attended Boston University. She worked in Boston as a schoolteacher for 45 years at the William Barton Rogers School in Hyde Park, at the Conservation of Eyesight & volunteered at the Guild for the Blind. Ms. ONeil would say she was the oldest living person receiving a pension from the Boston Public School System. Josephine also taught CCD and was the author of childrens religious books, notably Our Lady and the Aztec. She was a member of St. Marys Church in Melrose, the catholic book club & the ladies sodality for many years. Josephine was an avid photographer, gourmet cook and had a great sense of humor. Ms. ONeil loved to travel, especially the many countries in Europe where she traveled quite often. Josephine was the loving daughter of the late James E. & Mary (Mullane) ONeil. Devoted sister of the late M. Theresa & Paul E. ONeil. Caring aunt of Ruth Zimmerman & her husband Lyman of W. Medford, James E. ONeil & his wife Ann of Winchester and the late Eleanor A. ONeil-Selvitella & her husband James of Reading. Cherished cousin of Sister Marie Mullane of NY and Frederick Mullane & his wife Alice of Milton. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday May 16th in St. Marys Church Herbert St., Melrose at 9AM. Relatives & friends invited. There will be no visiting hours. Burial in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Josephines memory to Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Gillette Center, 10 Brookline Place, Brookline, MA 02445. Visitation: None None
