Kay (Ferentinos) Chakalis passed away peacefully at her daughter Cathy's home in Melrose, on November 26, 2011. She was 81 years of age. Kay was born in Langada Chios, Greece, to her late parents George & Catherine (Poulis) Ferentinos and came to the United States at the age of 7. She was raised in Malden and attended Malden schools. Mrs. Chakalis has been a lifelong resident of Melrose and Saco Maine where she summered most of her life. Kay loved the sea, watching the sun rise each morning with that first cup of coffee, awaiting each day with a purpose, happily helping those around her. She was a born nurturer who always has a smile for everyone, enjoyed raising her family, cooking and loved babies. Mrs. Chakalis worked at Transitron in Melrose for several years and at the gift shop located in the mall in downtown Melrose for a few years. She was a communicant of the Annunciation Cathedral of New England in Boston. She was active in Junior and Senior Goya and sang in the choir. She had an operatic voice and enjoyed singing at events and for her family also. She was the wife of 62 years to Harry J. Chakalis. Mother of Georgia Verenis & her husband Stephen of Hanover, Cathy Scarlatos & her husband Peter of Melrose, James Chakalis & his wife Joanne of Hingham, Stephen Chakalis & his wife Leslie of Melrose and Demetra Haley & her husband George. Sister of Mary Pappas of Malden, Bess Pappas & her husband Chris of Melrose and the late Nicholas George Ferentinos. Also survived by 9 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and many nieces & nephews. A Funeral service will be held at the Annunciation Cathedral of New England, 514 Parker St. Boston, on Tuesday Nov. 29th at 11AM. Relatives and friends are respectively invited to attend. Visitation will be held at church prior to the funeral on Tuesday morning from 10AM – 11AM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery in Melorse.
