Obituary

Lawrence E. “Butchie” Bright, age 75, of Saugus, formerly of Melrose, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife and children.

Born and raised in Chelsea, Butchie dedicated 47 years of service to the City of Melrose Department of Public Works. He truly loved going to work every day and took great pride in every job he did. His dedication, strong work ethic, and commitment to the community made him a true staple of the Melrose DPW.

Outside of work, Butchie found joy in caring for his home. He could often be found puttering around the yard, tending to his garden, spreading mulch, relaxing on his porch, or enjoying the sunshine in his yard. While he took pride in his work and home, his greatest accomplishment and source of happiness was his family, whom he loved with all his heart.

Butchie is survived by his beloved wife, Janice (Hult) Bright; his daughter, Tina (Bright) Dinardi and her husband, Anthony, of Saugus; his son, Greg Bright and his wife, Jodi, of Woburn; and his cherished grandchildren, Bria Prophete, Mackenzie Bright, and Emmett Bright, who will forever miss their beloved “Bucca.” He is also survived by his sister, Carol Galatis, as well as many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

He was the devoted son of the late William C. Bright and Bertha May (Coyne) Bright and was predeceased by his brothers, Thomas Bright, Kenneth Bright, and William Bright.

Butchie will be remembered for his unwavering dedication, humble nature, love of family, and the quiet pride he took in a job well done. His kindness, warmth, and steady presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Thursday, July 30, 2026, from 4:00PM-7:00PM. A funeral service will be held at the Gately Funeral Home on Friday, July 31, 2026, at 10:00AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend.
