Lawrence P. Pete Whittier passed away at Youville Hospital in Cambridge on August 24th at the age of 76. Pete was born and raised in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School. Mr. Whittier entered the Army after high school and served in the US Army during WWII. Pete started his career in plumbing & heating sales at Metropolitan Pipe & Supply in Cambridge and then owned his own company, Ideal Supply of Somerville for several years. He finished his sales career back at Met Pipe & Supply where he worked for 12 years before retiring in 1995. Mr. Whittier lived in Melrose for 36 years, summered on Cape Cod for over 50 years and has lived in West Harwich the past 12 years. He was a member of the Melrose Elks and past commander of the Somerville VFW. He was the husband of the late Barbara L. (Killam) Whittier. Father of Nancy M. Padulsky & her husband Steve of Gloucester, Larry Whittier & his wife Dottie of Reading and Lorraine J. King & her husband Andy of Wilmington. Brother of Irma Ainsworth of Stoneham, Eleanor French, Jean Cowan both of Andover and the late Lois Clark, Herbert & George Whittier. Grandfather of Joseph & Brianna Lovejoy, Andrew & Danny Whittier and Taryn & Braedon King. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Friday Aug. 27th at 9AM. Funeral Mass in St. Marys Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 10AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Thursday 4-8PM.
