Leo A. Green passed away at Brigham & Womens Hospital in Boston on January 8, 2006, after a brief illness. Leo was 99 years of age (in his 100th year). Mr. Green was born and raised in Orono, Maine and was schooled at Orono Catholic High School, he lived in Vermont for 2 years and has been a resident of Melrose since 1944. He started his working career in the Paper Mills in Maine, he worked as a civilian radio operator during WWII in Vermont and then as a quality control supervisor at the National Radio Company in Melrose for many years. Mr. Green was well known at Mt. Hood Golf Course in Melrose, as a member and he played every day including the 2005 season at the age of 99. He was also the first person to tee off the new 14th hole at Mt. Hood when it reopened 2 years ago. Leo was an active ham radio operator for the past 67 years and was well known locally & nationally by his call sign W1LML. He was a member of St. Marys Church, the Melrose Mens Bowling League, he was an avid Red Sox & sports fan. Leo enjoyed growing tomato plants from seed every year and distributed the plants to all his family members. He was the husband of the late Dorothy E. (Howard) Green. Father of Richard L. Green & his wife Nancy of Wakefield and Robert J. Green & his wife Pamela of Hollis NH. Grandfather of Timothy Green & his wife Deb of VT, Cathy Perron of VA, Dr. Andrea Matthews & her husband Tom of GA, Chris Green & his wife Andrea of Boxford, Michael Green & his wife Jonna of Westford and Dr. Julie Lively of TN. Also survived by 6 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandson. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Friday Jan. 13th at 9AM. Funeral Mass in St. Marys Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 10AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Thurs. 4-8PM. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery in Melrose.
