Louis W. Gibelli passed away at Chelsea Soldier's Home on Wednesday, April 9th at the age of 84. Louis was born in Boston, raised in the North End of Boston, attended Michael Angelo School and graduated from English High Class of 1936. He was a WWII Army Veteran, serving in the 390th Signal Company in the West Pacific. Louis was a radio operator during WWII in Hawaii, Saipain and Okinawa, received the Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, Asian Pacific Campaign Ribbon and the American Theater Campaign Ribbon. After his discharge from the Army in 1946 Louis went to work for Trimont Clothing and Barron Anderson Company as a stitcher and seamer until 1952. He worked for the Navy Department (First Naval District) as a teletype operator from 1952-1954 and moved to Melrose in 1954. Louis worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier in Melrose for 30 years. With the majority of his route being Main St. Melrose, he was a part of the 'local scenery'. He was known by most as 'Little Louie' or 'Louie the mailman'. 'Hey Kiddo', 'hey kids' or 'mail call' were the usual greetings remembered by most of the business owners. Louis was an officer in the Navy League Cadet Corps in the 1960's, was a former member of the Knights of Columbus & Holy Name Society at St. Leonard's Church in the North End, Melrose Chapter of the Son's of Italy and a present member of St. Mary's Church in Melrose. Louis was the husband of Antonina (Fici) Gibelli. Father of William L. Gibelli of Plymouth, Marilyn N. Walter of CT, Carol A. Nadeau of Melrose and Arlene M. Raymond of ME. Brother of Salvatore Gibelli of Billerica, Angelo Gibelli of Revere, Josephine Ciampa of Medford, Connie Bono of Somerville and the late Mary Messina & Guy Gibelli. Grandfather of William L. Gibelli Jr. of Somerville, Jake & Jesse Raymond both of ME, Roger Nadeau Jr. & Antonina Nadeau both of Melrose. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral From the Gately Funeral Home 79 W.
