M. Irene Conway, of Melrose, passed away at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on Wednesday, November 9, 2005. She was 91 years old. Born & raised in Melrose, she was the last remaining family member of the Conway Family, who was one of the first three catholic families to settle in Melrose. Her home at on Vinton St. was built by her great-grandfather, Daniel Conway, who at an early age was gardener at the Judge Sewall Estate which is now Sewall Woods Road. Irene graduated from St. Marys Grammar & High School and was a member of the Boston University Class of 1951 SMG. She worked as an administrative assistant to the Vice President of the International of Leigh Fibers Company for over 40 years. Miss Conway was active in the transportation circles and was Past President of the Womens Transportation Club of New England. She was one of the first women to be admitted to the Delta Nu Alpha Transportation Fraternity. Irene was a member of the BU Alumni Association, Bond Astronomical Club. N.E Geological Society, Melrose Historical Society, Melrose Womens Club, The Beethoven Society, Melrose Senior Center, Senior Chorus, & St. Marys Church & Ladies Sodality. She enjoyed playing the piano at different events around Melrose, including the yearly fashion show. She was an avid gardener, a world traveler, & a life long learner taking evening classes at Boston University for many years. Sister of Kathleen Conway Cronk of Melrose & Lynn, aunt of Carol Sullivan, Jean Dethomas, both of Melrose, Janet Battles of Plymouth, & Fred Cronk of Beverly. Also survived by several grand nieces & grand nephews & two great grand nieces. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Monday Nov.14th, at 8:30AM. Funeral Mass in St. Marys Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 10AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Monday morning from 8:30 9:30AM. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery in Stoneham.
