Obituary

Madeleine Boucher passed from this life on December 17, 2023. She was born on January 8, 1936, in Concord, NH, daughter of Dr. Pierre A. Boucher and Laurence (Pigeon) Boucher.

She graduated from St. John's High School in Concord, NH. She earned a BA at Mount St. Mary College in Hooksett, NH, an MA in English Language and Literature at Catholic University in Washington DC, and a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies at Brown University in RI.

She joined the faculty at St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH in 1969 as an Instructor; when she left in 1974, she was an Assistant Professor. In 1974 she joined the faculty at Fordham University in NY as Assistant Professor and rose to the rank of full Professor before her retirement in 1998. She was instrumental in coordinating courses from various departments to form the Women's Studies Program (later renamed the Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program).

In 1983-84, she was a Women's Studies in Religion Associate at the Harvard Divinity School. With the title of Research Associate and Visiting Associate Professor of New Testament, she taught "God-Language in the Gospels" in the Fall of 1983.

Among her published works are The Mysterious Parable: A Literary Study, 1977, a copy of which is in the Vatican Library; The Parables, 1981; and a number of articles on women in the Bible. She had a devotion to her patron saint, Saint Mary Magdalene, and was invited to give talks at Boston College and various churches.

In addition to her academic career, Madeleine was an accomplished artist — painter and sculptor — having studied at the Yale School of Art in CT and the Parsons School of Design (now part of The New School) in NYC.

She enjoyed travelling and visited England, France, Italy, and Israel.

She was a longtime resident of Stamford, CT, before she moved to Melrose, MA in 2019.

Madeleine is survived by her loving sisters Pauline Boucher and Marie Boucher; nieces and nephews Michael, Denise, Paul, Jon, Thomas, Nevenka, Lynn, Vivianne and Marcelle. Madeleine was preceded in death by her sister Louise LeCompte, brother George, and brother-in-law Norbert LeCompte.
