Margaret "Peggy" Hennigan (Sprague), 85, of Melrose, formerly of Charlestown, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 21, 2025, at the Sawtelle Hospice House in Reading, MA. In her final day's Peg was surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family.
Born on August 30, 1939, Peg was raised in Charlestown, daughter of Francis & Catherine Sprague. She graduated from St. Francis de Sales elementary school and Charlestown High School, class of 1958.
Peg married her ex-husband William J. Hennigan on February 2, 1962 at St. Joseph's Church in Somerville.
Peg is survived by her four children William Jr. and Kelly Anne, both of Melrose, Robert and his wife Elizabeth of Freeport, NY and Kathleen Scales and her husband Jason, of Reading.
After raising her children, Peggy worked at the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, where she retired from in 2002.
Peggy was Nana, Nani, and Ma to 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one grandson-in-law.
Margaret is preceded in death by her longtime companion Richard "Dick" Murphy of Melrose.
She is also survived by dear family friend Kathy Murphy of Melrose.
She is pre-deceased by her brothers Leo Scales and Daniel Sprague, and her sisters Joan (Scales) Schultz and Jean (Scales) Bando. She is survived by her brothers Francis and John Sprague.
Margaret loved nothing more than spending time with her family, having lunch with her sisters-in-law, and long car rides. Peg enjoyed reading and sitting on the porch listening to music with Dick and chatting with the neighbors.
In lieu of flowers please send donations in Peg's name to her favorite charity, St Jude's Children's Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
Visiting hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Thursday, July 24, 2025, from 9:00AM-11:00AM, followed by a funeral service in the funeral home at 11:00AM. Relatives & friends respectfully invited to attend. Interment will be private.
