Marjorie Louise "Margie" (Kelliher) Riggs, 96, of Kalispell, MT, formerly of Melrose, died Saturday, April 7, 2012 in Kalispell, Montana.
Mrs. Riggs was born in Malden, MA to the late Hugh and Abigail (Lally) Kelliher. Twin sister of the late Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Bangs formerly of Marshfield, MA. (Deceased 2010) Wife of the late Stanley A. Riggs (deceased 1987), mother of Mary Lou Bumgarner of Kalispell, MT and Stanley A. Riggs Jr. of Sarasota, FL.
Marjorie was raised in Malden MA, graduated from Malden High School and Wheelock College, class of 1936. She taught first grade with her twin sister in Malden then moved to Melrose where she taught first grade at the Horace Mann School until she retired in 1982.
During her 30 yrs of teaching first grade, she had the pleasure of teaching three generations of family members. In her retirement, she was delighted to often meet her former students in down town Melrose, and to hear how she was the first grade teacher for them or their parent or their child, and occasionally, all three. Her son, Stanley, and her daughter, Mary Lou, still recall how she would enjoy spending summers enthusiastically preparing lesson plans for the coming new school year. Her husband often kidded her about having to change the school door locks to get her to retire from the profession she had become such a part of, and that had become such a part of her.
And there was the Marjorie outside of school. The loving wife who was always seen with her attentive husband, going on trips or just running errands, always having the door opened, the chair held and her coat adjusted. She was the dedicated mother who instilled in her children the importance of an education, which enabled her daughter to go on to become a critical care RN and her son to become an orthopedic surgeon. She enjoyed her assisted living with friends at The Fitch Home in Melrose and she later resided at home with her daughter in Kalispell, Montana.
Friends and relatives are invited to a wake being held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose, MA, on Friday, April 20th from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. A Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Marjorie Riggs will follow at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose, MA.
