Mary E. (Filias) Carakatsane passed away at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, on July 6th, at the age of 87. Mary was born in Lowell, raised in Manchester-by-the-Sea, graduated from Story High School and Massachusetts College of Art. Mrs. Carakatsane ran the 1st National Store in Manchester-by-the-Sea during WWII, she lived in Melrose from 1947 to 1963 and has been a Saugus resident for the past 42 years. Mary was a homemaker, a former member of the Melrose Hellenic Social Club, the Pi Epilson Sigma Cub in Manchester, the Greek Orthodox Church in Lynn and a present member of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Ipswich. Mary was the wife of the late John Michael Carakatsane. Mother of Michael J. Carakatsane & his wife Pamela, Arthur J. Carakatsane & his wife Judy all of Lynnfield and William J. Carakatsane of Saugus. Sister of Gregory Filias of York Beach, ME, Alex Filias of Salem, Charles Filias of Manchester-by-the-Sea and the late William & Nicholas Filias. Also survived by many nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Saturday July 9th at 8:30AM. Funeral service in The Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church, 8 LaFayette St., Ipswich at 10AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Friday 4-8PM.
