Mary G. ( McAvoy)Mahoney in Peabody, formerly of Medford & Somerville, passed away on September 8, 2023, surrounded by her family. Mary was 90 years of age. She was born in Somervile on June 3, 1933, to the late Bernard & Mary Jennie Eve (McNamee) McAvoy. She was raised in Medford and graduated from Girls Catholic High School. Mary worked at Stone and Webster Engineering as a typist where she met her late husband, James Spence Mahoney. They were married September 10, 1955, and were together just shy of 68 years.

Mary was a longtime resident of Medford and worked later in life as a union waitress for many years and was a member of Local 26. She was known for her Irish sense of humor and for her incredible smile and laughter. She also enjoyed her summer cottage rentals at Long Sands Beach in York, Maine.

Mary was an avid shopper and especially loved taking the trains into Downtown Boston where she searched out bargains at Jordan Marsh and Filene's Basement then as times changed, to the Burlington Mall. But above all, she loved and cherished the numerous times spent with her family and grandchildren.

Mary was the loving mother of Mary C. Hastings & her husband John of Malden, James B. Mahoney & his wife Ann Marie of Wilmington, Diane M. McBrine & her husband John of Delray Beach, FL, and the late John J. Mahoney. She was the cherished grandmother of Jillian M. Hastings Gayed & her spouse Michael, Lauren C. Hastings & her spouse Lilian Mengesha, John E. Hastings IV, Jared S. McBrine, Brendan J. McBrine, Melissa M. Mahoney McGilvray & her spouse Philip, and Hillary A. Mahoney O'Connell & her spouse Scott. Proud great grandmother of Vivian & Jack. Loving sister of the late Bernard McAvoy and his late wife Nora (Terry).

Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Wednesday, September 13, 2023, at 9:00-10:45AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 441 Fellsway West, Medford at 11:30AM, followed by interment at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend.
