Mary J. Mahoney, born on March 25,1928 in Somerville, Massachusetts, to Mary and Michael Mahoney, died peacefully on
July 10, 2023, in West Hills, California. Mary lived life robustly with a sense of humor and always looking for her next adventure.
She served in the United States Foreign Service from the early 60's until September, 1990 when she retired as an administrative/personnel officer. Always longing to travel, Mary experienced the world with posts on five continents, including Delhi, Georgetown, Geneva, Dakar, Paris, Athens, the Sinai Desert, Singapore and many countries in Africa, often sightseeing in her beloved VW Bug.
Following retirement, Mary settled in Fernandina Beach, Florida for over 30 years, serving her community as a child advocate and as a volunteer with the Barnabas Center and enjoying life fully with her many friends who she met through the Newcomers Club of Amelia Island, St. Michael's Catholic Church and her neighborhood on Portside Drive.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, her brothers Michael and Thomas, sister Eileen, sister-in-law Shirley, brother-in-law Bob and niece, Michelle. She is survived by nieces, nephews and cousins on the East and West Coasts.
A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at Incarnation of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Church, 429 Upham Street
Melrose, Massachusetts at 10 a.m. on September 28, 2023 with burial to immediately follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Medford, Massachusetts.
