Obituary

Mary L. O'Brien passed away at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, on Friday, September 1, 2011, at the age of 90. Mary was born in Boston to the late Edward F. & Marie F. (Gill) O'Brien. She was raised in Boston, graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Roxbury in 1938, Emmanuel College in Boston Class of 1942 and received her Master's in education from Boston College in 1957. Miss O'Brien worked as a school teacher 45 years. Mary taught school for the Archdiocese of Boston from 1942–1973 and then in Boston Public Schools and St. Mary's School in Lynn from 1973 to 1987. Miss O'Brien lived in North Quincy for 8 years and Melrose for the past 30 years. Mary was a member of St. Mary's Church in Melrose, was and avid politician and a good friend of Melrose Mayor Rob Dolan. She loved the beach, trips to Cape Cod to visit the girls, swimming at the Melrose YMCA and loved spending time with her large extended family. Mary was the loving sister of the late Catherine M. MacDonald, Frances J. Day, Beatrice F. Brady, Walter G. O'Brien & Edward F. O'Brien. Devoted aunt of Jane Marie McGregor of CA, Rick MacDonald of NH, Beatrice Walsh & Paul Brady both of Marshfield, Ellen Perfetti of Foxboro, Ted O'Brien of MN, Julie O'Brien of Needham, Clare O'Brien of W. Roxbury and their families. Dear friend & adopted mom of Rose Kelley & her husband Scott Breska of Braintree. Adopted grandmother of Jennifer Devorak of MD, Melanie Bush & Shannon Kelley both of Braintree, Dylan Kelley US Army and their families. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Wednesday, Sept. 7th at 9AM. A Funeral Mass to celebrate Mary's life will be held at St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 10AM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours on Tuesday from 4-8PM. Interment in Milton Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Sisters of Notre Dame, Boston Province Center, 351 Broadway, Everett, 02149.
