Mary M.(Powell) O'Malley of Melrose, formerly of Malden, died on February 27, 2009 at the Melrose Wakefield Hospital. She was 99 years old. Born on October 11, 1909 in Malden to the late William & Josephine (Gaudet) Powell, she was raised in Malden and a graduate of Girls' Catholic High of Malden. She was a resident of West Yarmouth from 1971 to 1991 and then lived in Melrose for 17 years. Mrs. O'Malley worked as a telephone operator for the New England Telephone Company for 22 years. She was a former member of the Sacred Hearts Church of Malden and a current member of the St. Mary's Church of Melrose. Mary belonged to the New England Telephone Pioneers, Ladies Sodality of St. Mary's, the 200 Club, AARP and the Fuller House. She was the devoted wife of the late George H. O'Malley, with whom she shared 49 years of marriage. She was the loving mother of Barbara M. Daley & her husband Jack of N. Ft. Myers, FL, George H. "Jake" O'Malley & his wife Nancy of Malden & Mary Lou Atkinson & her husband Richard of Ocean Isle Beach, NC. She was the cherished grandmother of 7 & great grandmother of 13. Mary was the caring sister of Margaret Cruciotti of Malden, Rita Brown of CT, Theresa Hosbrook of OH, Elizabeth "Betty" Reccer of Malden & the late William Powell, Anna Mazza, Mildred Fleming, Rose Hopkins & Bernadette Lyons. She was also survived by many nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Tuesday March 3rd at 8AM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Mary's Church Herbert St., Melrose at 9AM. Family &friends respectfully invited. Visiting hours Monday 4-8PM. Interment in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
