Mary ''Phyllis'' (MacVarish) Tolland died at home Dec. 25th after a long illness at the age of 71. Phyllis was born in Malden, raised in Medford, graduated from Medford High School Class of 1948 and has been a lifelong resident of Medford. Phyllis worked as a secretary for Boston Filter Co., Medford High Special Ed. Dept. and for several years as a secretary for Dr. Edward Caggiano in Medford. She was a longtime member of St. Raphael Church in West Medford. Phyllis has spent the last several years as a proud grandmother. She was the wife of John A. Tolland. Mother of Laura J. Clougherty & her husband Tim of Melrose, Stephen F. Tolland of NH, Sheila M. Pondo & her husband Bob of FL and Virginia A. ''Ginny'' Lombardo & her husband Mark of Melrose. Sister of Eileen Lynch of Melrose, Lois Sullivan of Chelmsford, Jean Hart of Ipswich, Evelyn ''Evie'' Harrington of Medford and Helen Eovine of NH. Grandmother of Timmy, Erin, Colleen, Matthew, Kelsey, Stephen, Alison, Jessica, Miranda and Lydia. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St. Melrose on Friday Dec. 28th at 9 AM. Funeral mass in St. Raphael Church 512 High St. W.Medford at 10 AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Thurs. 4-8PM.
