IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Maureen A.
Hume
April 24, 1953 – December 27, 2024
Maureen Ann (Kenney) Hume of Stoneham passed away at home on December 27, 2024 in the company of her husband and sons.
Maureen was born in Stoneham on April 24, 1953 and was the daughter of the late Kieran and Rita (Keeley) Kenney of Medford.
She worked in health care her entire life, beginning her career in nursing at the Soldiers' Home in Chelsea, where she earned her LPN, and continuing at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford, where she worked in various units and then as a supervisor for many years. She earned her BS in Nursing at Northeastern in 1986, followed by an MS in Forensic Nursing from Fitchburg State in 2001.
Maureen spent the last 18 years of her career at the Massachusetts Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where she was most recently head of the Identification Unit, ensuring that decedents were properly and legally identified, and that their families and loved ones received the closure that they deserved. Along with her colleagues, she was honored with the 2024 Manuel Carballo Governor's Award for Excellence in Public Service, for establishing a program for the state to bury unclaimed decedents.
Outside of work, Maureen enjoyed watching movies and television, reading, crocheting, spin class, caring for her beloved dog Foster, and most of all spending time with her family.
Maureen is survived by her husband of 40 years Russell, her sons Andrew of Stoneham, David of Brooklyn, NY, and Patrick, his wife Kara (Manson), and their daughter Phoebe of Los Angeles, CA. She also leaves behind her brothers Kieran Kenney and Paul Kenney, sisters Patricia Daley and Rita Ward, eleven nieces and nephews, and many friends and colleagues.
Visiting hours will be at Gately Funeral Home in Melrose on Friday, January 3rd from 4-7PM, with private interment to follow at Mount Auburn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in her name to the MSPCA or the Cam Neely Foundation for Cancer Care
