Obituary

Melanie Ann Curley, age 80, of East Falmouth, MA, died on June 27, 2023, with her family by her side. She was born to the late Angelina and James Mootrey, Jr. on October 14, 1942 in Boston, MA. She grew up in West Newton, MA with her late brother, James Mootrey III.

Melanie married John L. Curley in 1965 and lived together in Sudbury and North Andover before relocating to East Falmouth. She is survived by her husband, John, age 83 and her beloved dog, Bailey. She also is survived by her two children, Susan Curley Burton and her husband, Jonas Burton, of Lone Tree, CO; and Matthew Curley and his wife, Caitlin, of Hollis, NH. As well as her five grandchildren who brought her so much joy, Alexander Burton, Aidan Curley, Ayla Burton, Brenna Curley, and Nolan Curley.

Melanie was a seasoned gardener who loved to get in the dirt to tend to each plant tenderly. She loved to teach others about how to get the best blooms, transplant peonies, and arrange hydrangeas artfully on a wreath. Mel was a true beach lover who carefully scoured the beach for beach glass and pretty shells. As a younger woman, she was a skilled first mate to sailor John despite her propensity for sea sickness. She loved to redecorate her home, taking great pride in making everything pretty and cozy. Mel loved to cook and was known for her lavish spreads and home cooked meals that nourished the body and soul. She was always on the lookout for the greatest bargain at her many shopping/thrifting spot.

Mel was a hard worker and could always be found doing something. She was hardly ever idle. Her kindness, despite how well she knew you, was notable. She loved to meet new people and no matter where she was she always seemed to know everybody! Melanie was a giver of great advice, words of encouragement, warm hugs, and herself. And she was funny. She loved playing games with her grandchildren, talking to them about their interests, telling funny stories and attending their sporting events, recitals, and other important events. As she got older and began to slow down, Melanie always said she needed to keep doing the things she loved. She did just that, continuing her gardening and helping to make Great Harbors a better place. As she cared for her husband, she powered through challenges with determination, always putting the needs of others ahead of her own. Melanie lived her life to the fullest with an infectious smile.

A wake will be held at Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose, MA on Wednesday, July 5th, from 4-7pm. A funeral mass to celebrate her life will be held on Thursday, July 6th, at 10am at St. Mary's Church in Melrose, MA. Her family graciously requests donations be made in her name to Tommy's Place in Falmouth or other charity in lieu of flowers.
