Obituary

Michael R. Vecchio of Melrose, June 9, 2009. Michael passed away at his home on June 9, 2009 surrounded by his family. Michael was born in Boston on December 22, 1935 to the late Gerry & Carmela (Picardi) Vecchio. He lived in East Boston until the age of seven when his family moved to Medford. Michael was raised in Medford, graduated from Medford High School, Class of 1953 and then received his degree in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University. Michael worked as an Electrical Engineer for American Optical in Bedford, Data Printer in Malden for many years as well as several other companies within the Boston area. Michael has been a resident of Melrose for the past 43 years. Michael had a passion for boating and was a member of the Mystic Wellington Yacht Club in Medford for over 30 years. After his retirement, he specialized in marine electrical work, and would help out fellow boaters throughout several local marinas. Michael was inventive, and developed a mathematics game with his brother Nicholas, which sold in area department stores. He loved being on his boat with his family and friends on Boston Harbor and local waters. Michael also enjoyed the beach, family vacations to York Beach Maine, traveling, trips to Foxwoods, going out with "the guys", catching lobsters, Saturday mornings at the club, planting his garden, skiing, and was a member of St. Mary's Church in Melrose. Michael cherished his friends, many lifelong from childhood, many from the Mystic Wellington Yacht Club, and some new, he loved you all so much. Your love and support brought him great comfort. A beloved husband of Mary L. (Doane) Vecchio. Devoted father of Michael R. Vecchio Jr. & his wife Mary Beth of Salem, NH and Virginia F. Vecchio of Melrose & most recently N. Andover. Loving grandfather of Ariadna & Michael Thomas Vecchio. Caring brother of Joseph M. Vecchio & his wife Marilyn of Canton/Falmouth, the late Nicholas Vecchio & his wife Frances of Stoneham & the late Marie Corricelli. Brother-in-law of Virginia Doane of Hull. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. The family wishes to acknowledge the wonderful care received at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Bruce E. Johnson, Pam Calarese, and the entire team of staff who provided our family with guidance, comfort, care, and kindness, we thank you so very much. We also wish to acknowledge Dr. David Calef of Melrose for his outstanding care. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Monday June 15th, at 9AM. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 10AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Sunday from 1:00-5:00PM. Interment at St. Michael Cemetery in Avon will be private on Tuesday. Served in the US Army during the Korean Era.
