Michael Vincent Batchelder, 52, of Melrose, passed away unexpectedly on May 11, 2026. Born on January 15, 1974, Mike was a lifelong resident of Melrose whose larger-than-life personality, unwavering devotion to family and country, and generous spirit left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Mike was the beloved husband of Jill Egel Batchelder, with whom he had just celebrated 21 years of marriage on May 7. Together they built a life centered on love, laughter, family, and community. He was the proud and devoted father of two daughters, Lauren and Alyssa, who were the center of his world. Nothing brought Mike greater pride than being a father. He looked forward to celebrating Lauren’s graduation later this month as she prepared to begin college at SUNY Plattsburgh this August, and he was excited to watch Alyssa begin high school this September.
He was the cherished son of Joanne Batchelder and the late Robert Batchelder. Mike also leaves his loving in-laws, David and Hilda Egel. Mike is survived by Ron Imperiali and his wife Rebecca, Steven Imperiali and his wife Kristin, Susan Imperiali, along with many loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Mike graduated from Melrose High School with the Class of 1992 and later attended University of Massachusetts Amherst. From an early age, he loved the outdoors and earned the distinguished rank of Eagle Scout, a reflection of the leadership and service that would define his life.
Driven by a deep sense of civic duty and love of country, Mike proudly served for 21 years in the Army National Guard. He remained deeply committed to supporting fellow veterans throughout his life, serving as a certified suicide prevention volunteer counselor for veterans.
Mike embraced life fully and enthusiastically. Known for his infectious smile, endless stories, and an answer for just about anything, Mike had a gift for filling every room with warmth and energy. His kindness, humor, loyalty, and patriotism will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, May 19, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at Gately Funeral Home. Immediately followed by a Celebration of Life service at 12:00 pm. A procession will depart at 12:30 pm for interment services at Temple B'Nai B'rith Cemetery on Route 128 North, just after Exit 40. The interment will include military honors in recognition of Mike’s years of service.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes contributions to educational funds established for Mike’s daughters, Lauren and Alyssa. Please contact Gately Funeral Home for additional information.
Mike was immensely proud of his service to his country, but even more proud of the family, friendships, and community he loved so deeply. His memory will live on in the countless lives he touched
