Obituary

Patricia M (Cullen) Shupe, formerly of Watertown and later of Beverly, Passed away peacefully on May 11, 2022 at Phillips Manor Nursing Home in Lynn. Pat was born in Boston on April 7th, 1933 to Anthony and Mary (Gorman) Cullen and was raised in Allston. She graduated from St. Columbkille High School in 1951. After graduation she worked for several years at Polaroid, in their accounting office before marrying. And after her children were grown, she returned to the workforce at General Cinema Corporation in their Accounts Payable office. She met the love of her life, her husband Jim, on a blind date. She came home from that date and told her mom she had just met her husband. They married in 1962 and shared 27 happy years of marriage. Family members often remarked that they just seemed to be "Playing house". That happy home expanded with the birth of their two children, Patty and David. In her late twenties, Pat accepted Jesus Christ as personal Lord and Savior of her life. Her faith grew over the years as did her love for His Word which she read almost daily. Her relationship with her Lord, helped her to navigate numerous hardships in her life, including the tragic death of her son David at age 16 and 10 years later of her beloved husband Jim at age 59, both of vehicular accidents. Pat had a gentle, kind spirit. She loved to laugh, although she could never tell a joke correctly. She enjoyed amateur photography, was an avid reader, and had a reputation of being a lead-foot driver. She freely gave of herself and her time to others, volunteering even after retirement as a driver for "The Old People" at the Watertown senior center. She was a life-saving help to her daughter Patty after the birth of Patty's twin boys, one of whom was severely disabled with Cerebral Palsy. When she could no longer safely live alone, she moved to Colonial Gardens retirement community in Beverly where she enjoyed 8 years with new friends, a revived social life, all while retaining a level of independence that she found fulfilling. Pat early on understood what was important in her life…. Honoring her Lord with her life and her relationships with people. Everything else she held "loosely", always looking forward, never seeming to be imprisoned by the past. Her unconditional love will be greatly missed by her family. II Tim 4:6b-8 "the time of my departure is at hand, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing." We will miss you Mum. We will see you "in the morning". Pat was the beloved wife of the late James D. Shupe, the loving mother of Patricia E. Parker and her husband Richard, and the late David A. Shupe. She was the very proud "Ganny" to her grandsons, Benjamin and Samuel. She was "oldest sister" to her siblings, the late Phyllis A. Cullen, Priscilla E. Cullen and the late John A. Cullen. Visitation will be held at the Gately Funeral home, 79 W. Foster St, Melrose on Monday May 16, 2022 from 4:00-7:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at the Church of the Open Bible, 3 Winn St Burlington on Tuesday, May 17th at 10:00 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial will be private at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Watertown. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Phillip's Manor Nursing Home, 28 Linwood Rd., Lynn, MA 01905
