Obituary

Paul J. Dwyer passed away at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, on January 8, 2006, he was 87. Paul was born in Gloucester, raised in Melrose, graduated from Melrose High School, Class of 1938, where he excelled in baseball. After serving in the US Army during WWII, Paul was recruited and played shortstop for the Boston Braves & the Cleveland Indians. After his baseball career Mr. Dwyer joined the Melrose Police Department and worked as a patrolman for 30 years, retiring in 1983. Paul was well known by the children in Melrose as he was stationed at the Winthrop School, Lincoln School and Franklin Square in Melrose. Paul was a lifelong resident of Melrose, he worked part-time at Casey Florist & Tucker Auto Supply after his retirement. He was a member of the Melrose Patrolmens Assoc., the Melrose Tennis Club, the VFW Harold OYoung Post #2394, St. Marys Church and the Holy Name Society in Melrose. Paul was the husband of the late Anne Marie (Kelliher) Dwyer. Father of Marie A. Schlesinger of CA, Claire Madden of Stoneham and Paula Schlesinger & her husband Ron of Melrose. Brother of the late Isabelle Murray, Thomas, Edward, Ted & James Rut Dwyer. Grandfather of Todd & Lindsay Schlesinger, PJ, Jennifer & the late Jeff Madden, Caitlin & Matthew Schlesinger. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Thursday Jan. 12th at 8AM. Funeral mass in St. Marys Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 9AM. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Wed. 4-8PM. Burial in Wyoming Cemetery Melrose. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Marys Church, 46 Myrtle St. Melrose 02176.
