Paul J. MacDonald passed away suddenly at his home in Melrose, on Wednesday, August 12, 2009. He was 65 years of age. Paul was born in Medford on October 21, 1943 to the late Ronald & Eleanor (Sarno) MacDonald. Paul was raised in Medford, graduated from Medford High School, Class of 1961 and from Boston University, Class of 1965. Mr. MacDonald worked as the property claims manager for One Beacon Insurance in Boston (formerly Commercial Union Insurance) for 40 years. After his retirement he went to work for Lexington Insurance as the director of property for the past 2 years. Paul was an avid runner, was dedicated to the sport and enjoyed running in any weather. He ran road races and half marathons on a weekly basis. Mr. MacDonald was the president of his fraternity at BU, was a member of the BU Alumni Association and was an avid BU hockey fan. Paul was a dedicated family man that enjoyed sports, baroque & classical music and gardening. Mr. MacDonald was a volunteer at the Greater Boston Food Bank and while working at One Beacon Insurance he was in charge of the charitable giving for the company. Paul was the husband of Victoria L. (Duff) MacDonald. Father of Paul M. MacDonald MD & his partner Michael Mazzarella of Winchester, Elizabeth A. MacDonald of Boston & James D. MacDonald of Melrose. Brother of Maryellen Fillback of Andover and the late Ronald & William MacDonald and Virginia Rollins. Also survived by several nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Monday August 17th at 8AM. Funeral Mass in St. Mary's Church, Herbert St. Melrose, at 9AM. Relatives & friends invited. Visiting hours Sunday 4-8PM. Interment will be private.
