Paul B. Mahoney, of Malden, passed away suddenly at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, after a long illness on Wednesday, May 13, 2009. He was 71 years old. Born in Cambridge to the late Matthew J. & Katherine "Kitty" (Dwyer) Mahoney, Paul graduated from Cambridge High & Latin in 1955 and from North Shore Community College with a degree in criminal justice. Mr. Mahoney had been a resident of Malden for the past 46 years. He was a US Army Vietnam War Veteran and a retired Staff Sergeant with the Massachusetts State Police. While on the State Police he was stationed at Troop E Weston Turnpike for many years & Troop F Logan Airport for 10 years. Paul was very active in the community as a member of the Irish American Club, the Italian Citizens Club, the Massachusetts State Police Association and past president of the over 40 softball league in Malden. Mr. Mahoney was an avid golfer and a former member of the Fresh Pond Golf Course in Cambridge and St. Mark's Golf Course in Southboro. He loved all sports, especially the Bruins, the Red Sox and enjoyed his "scratchies". His passion was his family. Paul is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Patricia A. (Sullivan) Mahoney, loving father of Karen E. Keller & her husband Mark of Chelmsford, Kelly A. Whitley & her husband Eric of Niskayuna, NY & Paul B. Mahoney, Jr. & his wife Karen of Stoneham. Cherished grandfather of Mark & Matthew Keller, Garrett, Aaron & Lindsey Whitley & Hannah & Patrick Mahoney. Caring brother of Francis "Frank" Mahoney & his wife Nancy of Woburn, Margaret "Peggy" Morrison & her late husband John of Watertown, John "Bonesy" Mahoney & his wife Carol of Cambridge, Maureen Morrison of Nashua, NH, Kathleen "Katie" Philpott & her husband Richard of Waltham & the late Matthew James "Jimmy" Mahoney. Also survived by many loving nieces & nephews. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home 79 W. Foster St., Melrose on Mon. May 18th at 9:30AM.
