Obituary

PETER J. DOLAN 63, FORMER ASST. SUPER OF THE EVERETT PUBLIC SCHOOLS From the day he began teaching in April of 1968 at the Parlin Jr. High School in Everett, Peter Dolan knew he was in the right profession. Having grown up in Everett he attended the Parlin Jr. High School himself. His love of teaching was evident amongst his many students over his 38 years of service to the Everett Public Schools. He eventually became Sub-master and then Principle of the Parlin Junior High School. He ended his career as Assistant Superintendent of Schools. Locally in Melrose, he served 5 terms on the Melrose School Committee from 1984 through 1994 and was Chairman two terms in 1988 and 1989. He was elected to the Melrose Democratic City Committee Hall of Fame in 2003. He always enjoyed the political arena and when his son was elected Mayor of the City of Melrose, he was so proud. In his earlier years he enjoyed coaching Little League, Girl's Softball and was a Cub Scout Leader. He enjoyed gatherings, and good conversation with many close friends. Most of all, he cherished his vacations and weekends at his lake house in NH where he enjoyed his beloved grandchildren, many friends and neighbors. He loved gardening and boating and was a great host for many family celebrations. Mr. Dolan was diagnosed with prostate cancer in December of 1999 and underwent numerous treatments and participated in many research studies under the compassionate care of Dr. Matthew Smith at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He fought his disease with courage, grace and great dignity and never once gave into it. He was treated and supported by many of Dr. Smith's staff including his primary oncology nurse Laura Ryan who was always ready with her expert care and quick wit. Mary Ann Fallon, Dr. Smith Adm. Asst. was a saving grace with her kindness and understanding as well as Xenia Tony who made his complicated medical appointment schedule work like a charm and all with great compassion. Nurse Practitioners Kara Olivier and Melissa Goode were devoted care givers. Drs. Shipley and Coen and many more went the extra mile to help stem his disease. But in the end, he was grateful to have the services of Partners Hospice who continued his care at home and gave him a sense of comfort ability and supportive care. Peter Dolan left the world a better place and touched the lives and hearts of so many. Peter was the beloved husband of Rosemary (MacLaughlin) Dolan. Loving father of the Honorable Robert J. Dolan, Mayor of the City of Melrose and his wife Alison, Dr. Sara Looby and her husband Greg of Newton, and Amy Sestito and her husband Anthony of Melrose. Devoted grandfather of Ryan and Kiley Dolan, Brendan Sestito and Peter Looby. Brother of John E. Dolan & his wife Dorothy of Chelsea, and cherished friend to many. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Monday, May 24th at 9:00AM. A Funeral Mass in Peter's memory will be celebrated at Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield at 10AM. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend.
